Emergency Response to the DRC / Rwanda Volcanic Eruption Victims in Rubavu
Since November, YWCA is in partnership with Church Word Services, and ACT Alliance with the support of the Week of Compassion in the implementation of the Emergency Response to the DRC / Rwanda Volcanic Eruption project in Rubavu district. The project aims at responding to the emergency needs of victims of the Earthquake due to volcano eruption in Rubavu district, Rugerero sector. With that, 69 affected families were supported with iron sheets and cements which helped them to repair their damaged homes.
MUKESHIMANA AISHA, a resident of Rwaza cell, Rugerero sector, is one of the victims who got 25 iron sheet and 6 bags of cement as her house was destroyed by the earthquake and left her and her family homeless “I have five children and feeding them is a tag of war because I rely on part time jobs, this therefore makes it hard for me to afford the cost of Iron sheets and cement” Aisha said.
NTURANYENABO Jean Marie Vianney, the father of six children and a wife living in Kiroja village, Rubavu cell, Rugerero sector. Jean Marie lives with a disability and the earthquake left cracks in his house which left him and his family at a risk of the house falling on them.. “I am poor ; it is difficult for me to get money for iron sheets and cement because of a live with a disability I can’t work. When rained I kept on praying that the house does not fall on us. Receiving the iron sheets and cement, has brought back my hope and grateful to YWCA and CWS for the support. Said Jean Marie.
Rubavu district, in particular Gisenyi town, was hit by an earthquake due to Nyiragongo volcano eruption in May 2021.
