YWCA Rwanda in partnership with OXFAM and Rulindo District joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International women’s day on 8th march 2015. The global theme was “Make it happen” while the national theme was “Strive for sustainable development.” The celebrations were graced by The Mayor of Rulindo District MR. KANGWAJE Justus who was the chief guest, Representatives from OXFAM, YWCA Staff, district officials, artists, students and residents in the district.

International women’s day celebrations were held in Rulindo district Burega sector, Butangampundu cell and Gashinge village.
OXFAM thanked all participants and the district of Rulindo for their support and for turning up in large numbers to stand together with women. He noted that OXFAM works towards the advancement of women and that is why they took part in the funding of the celebrations. OXFAM pledged continued support towards women issues. He noted that women play a vital role in the development of households and therefore should be supported.

The president of YWCA Rwanda noted that YWCA has been at the fore in fighting for women’s rights especially the young women and girls. She noted that YWCA celebrates the day annually. She thanked all the participants for coming in large numbers and urged for their support in championing the rights of women. She thanked the district of Rulindo for the partnership and for permitting YWCA to organize the celebrations in the district. The president also thanked OXFAM for funding the International women’s day celebrations.

The Mayor of Rulindo district noted that it is important to appreciate the efforts made by women activists especially those who were present in the Beijing declaration. He appreciated the efforts made by women in the development of Rulindo district. He recognized the efforts and great support of YWCA Rwanda and OXFAM in spearheading the International women’s day celebrations in the district.

The day was characterized by performances from different groups like Intore Z’umutima wu rugo. This group marched and had a brief parade demonstration. There was also a demonstration on the importance of sports because it contributes greatly to people’s health. They stressed the importance of Rwandan culture and urged all people to respect and promote the values of culture especially Umugoroba wa babyeyi a platform used by parents to discuss different issues related to culture. There was also performance from renowned Rwandan artist Knowles who entertained the audience through educative songs. She urged the entire community to support women in all areas. Micomiza Kezakase a pupil from Burega delivered an inspiring poem on how women have transformed and should be respected.

YWCA and OXFARM supported the women and the best performing students through giving them;
o Fifty goats to help them uplift their economic status.
o The three best students who presented poems, songs and comic strips were awarded fifty thousand francs in appreciation of their good work. Other three students who were in the 2nd category were awarded thirty thousand and the last three in the 3rd position moved away with twenty thousand francs each.

The international women’s day celebrations in Rulindo district were colorful and graced by the presence of the District authorities, YWCA Rwanda and OXFAM. Students and the entire Rulindo community were supportive of the celebrations. Many people learnt about the international women’s day during the celebrations. We commend all the partners who joined hands in making the day a great success. YWCA Rwanda was proud to have partnered with OXFAM and Rulindo district in reaching out to many women in the community. YWCA realized the objectives of the celebrations.
